Adding to the festivities, the celebrated singer of Indian Classical music Kaushiki Charkraborty, mesmerised a housefull audience at the Barbican as part of the Darbar Festival. Coming from a musical family – Chakraborty’s father and teacher is the renowned singer Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty – and hailed as a prodigy when she first emerged as a performer, she has established herself as one of the finest interpreters of the style, completely devoted to the art and its depth and spirituality.

She received the BBC Award (2005) for outstanding achievement in music when she was 25 years old. On receiving this award she was praised “as one of the brightest emerging artists in Indian vocal music”. The BBC also made a short film featuring her musical journey — which covered people and places linked with her music.
