Celebrating Durga Puja with the community, Asda adds a dash of fun and tradition with a Toran making workshop for the children

Durga Puja brings with it the spirit of festive celebration, an atmosphere of devotion and the joy of community get-togethers.

The week-long festivities, see families come together at different Puja Pandals across the UK, with parents passing on traditions and unique rituals down to their children. This year Asda partnered with the Panchamukhee Durga Puja at Harrow Arts Centre, to be a part of the festivities creating a bridge for children to observe and celebrate the rituals with a unique Toran making workshop.

With the festive season underway, every household welcomes their guests with colourful Torans hanging by the door, magnificent Rangolis and best wishes. Giving children a chance to be a part of the festivities by adding their unique touch to the celebrations, Asda conducted a workshop where children were not only given a chance to explore their creative side but also bond with their family, friends and the community.

On Asda partnering with the community, spokesperson from Panchamukhee said: “The festival epitomises the victory of good over evil and living here in the UK, we try and ensure the festivities are as grand as they are back home. Along with the celebrations, this is also an effort to pass on the tradition to the younger generation who are brought up here. It is endearing to see corporates like Asda immerse themselves into our culture and help pass on the tradition – in a fun and creative manner like the Toran making workshop.”

Parents joined in with their children to create beautiful Torans. Speaking at the event one of the parents of the nine-year-old Noyonika Basu said: “It was heart-warming to see all the children come together and create these beautiful torans. My daughter was excited about it and asked a lot of questions on why we have torans. It was a very enriching experience, not only did they have fun but it was a good way to pass on a small piece of our tradition to them as well. The fact that Asda had initiated this makes you feel that they understand our traditions and rituals.”

Each child put their creative best forward and their infectious enthusiasm filled the celebrations, as they played with coloured gemstones to create Torans, which they proudly showcased to their family. From 7 years olds to teenagers, they all were happy and felt they were doing something special this festive season for their family and their house.

Spokesperson from Asda said: “At Asda we consistently strive to improve our range to cater to the community’s needs. But the endeavour doesn’t stop with just the range, it also includes being a part of the festivities and joining the community in these celebrations which are special for them.”
